5/23/2023 0 Comments Snapped by Laura Griffin(Do not bring details and nuance into my brain candy!) Yet, with that said, her novels still seem well-researched-more so than your average CSI episode at least. She’s got a snappy, journalist style and doesn’t get bogged down in procedure or unnecessary details. And, a lot of those elements are there in subsequent books-plus, Griffin’s a pretty good writer. So, I keep reading Griffin’s books, hoping to recapture that magic. I also really, really enjoyed the first book in the Tracers series (which is kind of connected to the Glass Sisters series), Untraceable, because one of the main characters is a female computer hacker for good, which is incredibly badass. Those two books were the perfect formula for awesomesauce brain candy: decently suspenseful but not too stressful, smart/tough women, smart/tough guys, an interesting setting. This is my problem: I enjoyed the hell out of Laura Griffin’s Glass Sisters duology (especially the first one, Thread of Fear). But, oh no… a new Tracers book magically accidentally landed on my Kindle and I devoured it in a couple of evenings. For real… you’d think after I went mildly ballistic over the Magical Missing Condom Syndrome in Griffin’s previous novel, Snapped* and wanted to strangle the main character in One Wrong Step (Celie is the worst main character I’ve ever read-I wanted the bad guys to kill her and leave her body in a ditch), I’d be able to make a clean break from Griffin’s books.

Hired to find a teenager who has been taken to the Otherworld, Eugenie comes face to face with a startling prophecy - one that uncovers dark secrets about her past and claims that Eugenie's first-born will threaten the future of the world as she knows it. Her most recent case, however, is enough to ruin her appetite. No love life to speak of for months, then all at once, every horny creature in the Otherworld wants to get in your pants.Įugenie Markham is a powerful shaman who does a brisk trade banishing spirits and fey who cross into the mortal world. In the ensuing months, Ethan tries to carry on while Grace shuts down almost completely, losing her business and her bearings. His father Ethan, an English professor at a small college nearby, bears guilt for not having insisted that Josh come away from the road his mother Grace is guilt-ridden as well, for having insisted they stop at the gas station so that Josh’s sister Emma could use the restroom and Dwight, running late after seeing a Red Sox game with his son and worried about the wrath of his ex at not having Sam back on time, not only has to bear the certainty of having killed someone Sam’s age, but also the fact that the sleeping boy received a black eye from the accident-to go along with the broken jaw that Dwight had given him accidentally on another occasion. Ten-year-old Josh Learner barely knew what hit him that summer night in northwestern Connecticut, on the way back from a symphony picnic with his family for the three adults-his parents and the driver of the speeding car-who saw what happened, it was as if their lives stopped then, too. The complex stages of guilt, grief, and recovery in the wake of a boy’s hit-and-run death are exquisitely portrayed in this heartrending story by Schwartz (Bicycle Days, 1989), whose characterizations are as finely nuanced as they are sympathetic. 5/23/2023 0 Comments Tangled Threads by Pegi Deitz SheaThis archetypal immigrant story introduces readers to the fascinating Hmong culture and offers a unique outsider’s perspective on our own. Most Americans dismiss George III as a buffoon–a heartless and terrible monarch with few, if any, redeeming qualities. The truth is much more nuanced and fascinating–and will completely change the way readers and historians view his reign and legacy. The last king of America, George III, has been ridiculed as a complete disaster who frittered away the colonies and went mad in his old age. Events in History at the Time of the Novel The Great Migrationīlacks had begun leaving the South in significant numbers near the end of the nineteenth century, but in the period during and after World War I these numbers jumped dramatically. This oppressive urban environment forms the back-drop to Native Son, Wright’s first full-length novel. In doing so the Wrights joined a steady stream of black families who left behind Southern poverty and racism to search for a better life in the North, in what came to be known as the “ Great Migration.” Often, however, they merely ended up trading rural poverty for urban squalor, with only superficial changes in the racism of the surrounding white society. They grow into multidimensional characters, and the reader gets a good look at what life was like in Ireland during that time. The characters, although meeting for the first time in a brothel, get to know each other through letters and visits. We get to know Will, see how he meets Isobel, and discover how he encourages her to leave the life she's living and do better for himself. I really liked the first half of this book. But can Isobel escape her past and adapt to life and the chance of love on Merrion Square? Or will she always be seen as a scarlet woman? On the advice of a handsome young doctor, she leaves the brothel and enters domestic service. Disowned, she left Co Galway for Dublin and fell into prostitution. Isobel Stevens was schooled to be a lady, but a seduction put an end to all her father's hopes for her. But when Will spends a night in a brothel on the eve of his best friend's wedding, little does he know that the scarred and disgraced young woman he meets there will alter the course of his life. His parents were appalled and his fiancée broke off their engagement. Tired of treating rich hypochondriacs, Dr Will Fitzgerald left his father's medical practice and his home on Merrion Square to live and practice medicine in the Liberties. The film revisits the themes of fate, conscience, and circumstance that the Coen brothers had explored in the films Blood Simple (1984), Raising Arizona (1987), and Fargo (1996). Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin, the film is set in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas. No Country for Old Men is a 2007 American neo-Western crime thriller film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, based on Cormac McCarthy's 2005 novel of the same name.
